-
Non-exempt retail shops must remain closed for the full day on ANZAC Day
-
The restrictions apply to larger retailers including department stores, supermarkets and fashion outlets
-
An additional public holiday will be observed on the Monday following ANZAC Day in 2026 and 2027
-
Good Friday and Easter Sunday remain restricted trading days
NSW businesses face updated trading restrictions for ANZAC Day and the Easter long weekend in 2026, with full-day closures now mandatory for many non-exempt retail shops.
Under the Retail Trading Amendment (Anzac Day Trading Hours) Act 2024, most large retailers — including department stores, supermarkets and fashion outlets — are prohibited from opening at any time on ANZAC Day. The NSW Government introduced the changes to reflect the significance of the day and ensure workers can participate in commemorative events.
Exempt Businesses
Certain businesses are permitted to trade on ANZAC Day. Exemptions apply to:
-
Licensed venues (hotels and bars)
-
Shops listed under Schedule 1 of the Retail Trading Act 2008
-
Small businesses that fall outside the defined non-exempt categories
Business owners unsure of their obligations can contact NSW Fair Trading for clarification.
Additional Public Holiday in 2026 and 2027
ANZAC Day falls on a Saturday in 2026 and a Sunday in 2027. The NSW Government has announced an additional public holiday will be observed on the Monday following ANZAC Day in both years.
Importantly, the trading restrictions that apply on ANZAC Day itself will not apply to the additional Monday holiday (27 April 2026). The extra holiday is intended to reinforce the significance of the day while aligning with how other major public holidays are treated when they fall on a weekend.
Easter Long Weekend Rules
Easter trading restrictions remain in place and vary by day:
-
Good Friday and Easter Sunday: Most retail shops must remain closed unless exempt
-
Easter Saturday and Easter Monday: Most retail businesses may trade without special restrictions
What Small Businesses Should Do
NSW small business owners are encouraged to:
-
Check whether their business qualifies for an exemption under the Retail Trading Act 2008
-
Plan staffing and opening hours around restricted trading days
-
Note that the Monday public holiday in 2026 and 2027 is not subject to ANZAC Day trading restrictions
-
Contact NSW Fair Trading if uncertain about their obligations
